A little anxiety

So, RAGBRAI (the [Des Moines] Register’s Annual Great Bicycle Ride Across Iowa–400-some miles during the hottest week of the year) starts in a little over seven weeks. (a) I’m not ready! and (2) I feel a little anxious about it.

I know, I know, seven weeks is enough time to prepare. And I’ve been riding daily to work, and am ramping it up to be at least six miles each way, which last year easily got me in shape for doing 35-mile rides. And 35-mile rides get you into shape for doing 50- and 60-mile rides.

RAGBRAI’s longest day this year is on Day #2, 83 miles with 4,239 feet of climb. That is going to be a LONG day.  The other days are around 55 miles each, more or less.

I know I can do it. I *will* do it, because we have put a few hundred dollars down on doing it.

I think I’m obsessing about this because now I know what RAGBRAI is like. Two years ago, before RABRAI 2011, I blithely (under-)trained for it & worried about things like hitting a deer (could happen!) or getting struck by lightning or having a wreck. That said, by the last week of July 2012 I felt in better shape than I had been the year before when I did RAGBRAI, and I think that was just from doing more daily riding.

I don’t know where I’m going with this. Just wanted to put it out there so I can forget about it and JUST RIDE.

P.S.  Got to see a huge heron fly low over the Celery Bog Bridge while I was riding my bike home.  After a while herons seem to be a dime a dozen around here, but seeing the huge wing  span never ceases to thrill me.
